City of Port St. Lucie: Cross-Town Parkway Corridor Segment 3
(Bridge over Florida’s Turnpike)
City of Port St. Lucie, Florida
American/Avalon completed design and assisted in construction inspection for this 1.3 mile project that includes field survey, design, permitting, construction inspection and certification services for stormwater, bridge and roadway improvements. This project included a 6-lane divided roadway section and a 6-lane bridge. Precast prestressed concrete beams spanning almost 128 ft supported by decorative arch and column piers were used to carry traffic over Florida's Turnpike and South Macedo Blvd. Varied skew angles were required to accommodate the Turnpike lanes as they approached the nearby service plaza. Both end bents were wrapped in MSE retaining walls to minimize fill and R/W requirements. Multi-use trails were incorporated into both the north and south sides of the roadway corridor with 8-feet wide concrete paths lined with native trees and shrubs. Three rest stop areas with benches and overhead shade structures are also included. One included a view of one of the constructed wet detention ponds. The project also included wetland delineation, wildlife surveys, and permitting with South Florida Water Management District, Army Corps of Engineers and Environmental Protection Agency. Involvement also included completing a Wetland Rapid Assessment Procedure to assess the quality of the wetlands.
