FDOT District 2: District-Wide Bridge Repair
State of Florida

American/Avalon is responsible for the preparation of repair plans for numerous bridges throughout District 2. Repair plans included the following;

  1. Replacement of the concrete fender system on the James T. Butler Bridge and the Amelia Island Bridge in Jacksonville with a new fender system using plastic piles and whalers to provide a higher level of durability and energy absorption capability. A comprehensive investigation into the advantages and disadvantages of each type of system was conducted to determine the fender system that would provide the most value to the District. Repairs to the impacted fender system of the Acosta Bridge were also completed including the replacement of several piles and whalers as well as the catwalk.

  2. Rehabilitation, repair and painting of the Hart Bridge in Jacksonville which includes a three-span continuous truss having span lengths of 748’, 1088’ and 748’. A complete finite element model of the bridge was developed to identify areas in need of repair due to corrosion and section loss in the steel members. Repairs were designed to strengthen the bottom and top cords of the truss as well as several diagonals. Repair details were developed for numerous connections throughout the length of the truss as well as to bearing plates and expansion joints.

  3. Rehabilitation, repair and painting of the Sisters Creek Double Leaf Bascule Bridge. Rehabilitation includes the installation of induced cathotic protection systems, replacement of the railings, and repairs to the areas of the structural system where section loss has advanced to the state where higher than allowable stresses are being experienced.
