Guardrail and Cable Barrier Design Build Projects American/Avalon has completed five design build projects through central and south Florida. These projects include installation of both w-beam guardrail and cable barrier. The projects are summarized below.
- I-4 Median Guardrail Design Build, FDOT District 5 (Orange, Osceola, Seminole Counties) American/Avalon designed median guardrail plans for Interstate 4 in Osceola, Orange and Seminole Counties for FDOT District 5. Guardrail improvements were made at five different locations along I-4. The work consisted of constructing doublefaced, W-beam strong post guardrail with appropriate end anchorages. The guardrail was continuous throughout each segment. In Segment 4 the existing guardrail remained but the bridge end anchorages were upgraded to meet current standards. The guardrail was offset 12 feet from of the edge of travel lane. The total length of guardrail installed was 12.6 miles.
- I-75 Median Guardrail Design Build, FDOT District 5 (Sumter County) American/Avalon designed median guardrail plans for a continuous 14.3 mile stretch of I-75 in Sumter County from the Withlacooche River to Panasofkee Creek Bridge. Improvements consisted of constructing doublefaced, W-beam strong post guardrail with appropriate end anchorages and rub rail as needed. The guardrail was offset 12 feet from of the edge of travel lane. The existing paved shoulder was widened from 4 feet to 12 feet. Baffles were placed around several median inlets to store runoff for water attenuation. Bridge end anchorages were upgraded to meet current standards.
- I-75 Median Cable Barrier Design Build, FDOT District 1 (Charlotte, Sarasota and Manatee Counties) Cable Barrier was installed one mile and one mile south of 14 interchanges. The barrier was installed to eliminate illegal u-turns on the interstate and prevent cross over accidents. The cable barrier was installed 17 feet from the edge of travel lane. This location minimized Maintenance of Traffic requirements thereby speeding construction and reducing hazards during construction. Approximately 28.4 miles of cable barrier were constructed.
- I-95 Median Guardrail Design Build, FDOT District 5 (Volusia County) Median guardrail was installed along 12.5 miles of I-95 to prevent cross over accidents. The existing 4 foot paved shoulder was widened to 12 feet wide. The guardrail was set 12 feet from the edge of the travel way. Existing bridge anchorages and end anchors were upgraded to meet current standards.
- I-75 (Alligator Alley) Cable Barrier System Design Build, FDOT District 1 (Collier County) American/Avalon was responsible for the design portion of this Design Build project for a 50-mile cable barrier to prevent errant vehicles from straying into the canals that parallel much of the Interstate in the County. This unique project also included an integrated solar powered strobe light system used for locating impacts to the barrier. This project has received the FDOT’s 2004 Chairman’s Award for Raising the Bar on Safety on Florida’s Toll Facilities, FICE Grand Award for Engineering Excellence-Transportation, and ACEC 2005 Honor Award for Engineering Excellence.
