City of Tallahassee Parks and Recreation: Northwest Park
Tallahassee, Florida

American/Avalon’s Landscape Architect was responsible for updating and reworking existing site design for ball fields, courts, playground areas, parking areas, grading, drainage, utilities and preservation areas for trails. The project redesign was coordinated with Parks maintenance staff to reduce costs of construction and long term maintenance. American/Avalon worked with staff to prepare exhibits for grant applications for the improvements to the ±79 acre site. In addition, permit plans were developed for phase one of park construction, including on site coordination with surveyors, tree removal calculations and negotiations with permit staff for tree credit methodology. These phase one plans involved grading the site to spread two large mounds of fill excavated from the existing stormwater pond, which was constructed for the improvement of the road along the park’s western boundary. In order to make use of on site resources, the site’s trees were reviewed with a forester for harvest value. The bid documents include specifications for the contractor to harvest the trees and stabilize the site and not allow sedimentation of the existing pond.
