Big Lagoon State Park is an existing recreation area operated by Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP). The Park is located west of Pensacola, Florida in Escambia County. Services provided by American included furnishing, providing, and performing engineering analysis, field reviews, design, plan preparation, contract bid documents, permitting services, meetings with local government and utilities, in connection with the planned Big Lagoon State Park Sewer Improvements Project.
The plans included design and construction requirements for installation of force main pipes, lift stations, improvements and other incidental design items within the project limits. Minimum impacts to roads were ensured. Improvements and changes were not made to existing drainage other than that described below. The plans were prepared in accordance with all standard and current design manuals and policies accepted by FDEP.

- Boat Ramp Restroom, Lift Station Upgrade and
Force Main Installation: tems and work included upgrading an existing pump station with high head sewage pumps and controls, installing approximately 2,000 feet of 1.5 inch force main (FM), installing approximately 2,000 feet of six-inch FM, abandoning two existing septic tanks / drain fields, modifing an existing lift station to operate as manhole, and one ditch crossing. The ditch crossing will consist of approximately 40 feet of road reconstruction (12 foot width), removal and disposal of an existing 48 inch corrugated metal pipe (CMP), and construction of approximately 30 linear feet of 4-inch x 68-inch elliptical concrete pipe with endwalls.
The plans were developed to address the abandonment of a minor septic tank/ drain field (boat ramp). This was accomplished by constructing a new low flow/ low head sewage pump station and approximately 2,000 feet of 1.5 inch force main pipe. The 1.5 inch pipe was designed to adequately pass flows to an existing manhole near the Governor’s Pavilion picnic area. New high head sewage pumps were installed in an existing six-foot diameter lift station to allow the abandonment of a major septic tank and drain field (north of boat ramp). Sewage is currently pumped from Governor’s Pavilion, the amphitheatre, and East Beach to a pump continued... station that “feeds” the major septic system. The new high head pump station was sized to adequately handle flows from an existing, adjacent campground area. The new “main” lift station for the Park was hydraulically modeled to ensure that flow can be discharged to an existing 12 inch FM located on Perdido Key Drive. The existing 12 inch FM is part of the system operated by the Emerald Coast Utilities Authority (ECUA) and connects to a major lift station that is capable of passing approximately 1,400 gallons per minute at 140 feet total dynamic head.
- Campground Area: An additional work task included the design of approximately 2,000 feet of FM and the permitting of the proposed pipe route. Plans (plan & profile) for the campground force main were produced for permitting and construction under this contract.
