Glenwood Avenue Intersection Improvements:
North and South of East Morris Street
Whitfield County, Georgia
The improvements proposed on Glenwood Avenue include the widening of Glenwood Avenue (north and south of East Morris Street) along the east side to accommodate left turn lanes. The design along the east side of Glenwood Avenue will include curb and gutter and sidewalk on the along with improvements to the radii. The County wanted to maintain the existing curb and gutter and sidewalk on the west side of Glenwood Avenue south of East Morris Street but the curb and gutter and sidewalk will be replaced north of East Morris Street. The entire project will be updated to meet current ADA criteria.
The existing right-of-way is 60’ and additional right-of-way will be required on the east side of Glenwood Avenue. The proposed drainage inlets will tie into the existing drainage system. The existing strain poles will be upgraded with steel mast arms on the north east corner and the sought west corner of the intersection. A retaining will be constructed along the east side of Glenwood Avenue north of East Morris Street to minimize additional right-of-way impacts.
A signal warrant analysis was performed to determine the required turn lane storage for the new left turn lanes along Glenwood Avenue and calculate the required signal timing for the new configuration. The new improvements follow all Whitfield County, MUTCD, and Georgia Department of Transportation standards.
