American was selected to perform a Project Development and Environment (PD&E) Study to evaluate the replacement alternatives for the US 1/SR 5 low level bridges in northeast Palm Beach County. The US 1/SR 5 low level bridges include four structures, two northbound and two southbound. The study also evaluated upgrading the roadway section between the bridges from a suburban to an urban section and installing bicycle lanes and sidewalks on both sides of the road. Tasks included: a community impact assessment, traffic noise study, contamination screening evaluation, section 4(f) determination, visual and aesthetic impact assessment, water quality impact evaluation, wetland evaluation, endangered species assessment and essential fish habitat assessment, GIS research, identification of permit conditions, and coordination with state, federal and local agencies. Through the study and evaluation process, a single Preferred Alternative was developed which includes the replacement of the existing twin structures with similar parallel structures that include sidewalks and bicycle lanes on both sides. The roadway between the bridges is proposed to be upgraded to an urban section through the installation of curb and gutter. The vertical clearances of the bridges are also proposed to be increased to 12 feet above mean high water. American is also developing the design/build criteria package for the project.
